There is so much information available on fitness that it can be hard to digest. It can also be difficult to decide which sources are reliable. Is the information you’re reading based on facts or are they just myths? Anyhow, it is important that you can distinguish between the two so that you can reach your training goals.
Below are some popular training myths for you to avoid.
Myth # 1: The latest gym equipment gives better results
Modern gyms are full of the latest weight lifting machines. It can be difficult to decide which machines are best for your workout. The truth is that the best gym equipment you can use is the old fashioned free weights. This is because free weights target your stabilizer muscles. To get lean you need to stimulate as much muscle as possible with each exercise you perform. Machines stabilize your muscles and therefore take away the opportunity to build strong stabilizer muscles which support the growth of bigger muscles. Read my post The Truth About Free Weights And Machines.
Myth # 2: The longer you’re at the gym, the better the results
If you go to the gym every single day of the week then your at risk of overtraining. When you over train you slow down muscle growth. This is because your muscle tissue doesn’t have time to repair and will continue to break down. This means you will actually start to lose muscle.
When you’re at the gym push your muscles, however, if your workouts are lasting more than an hour then you are either resting too long between sets or training too much. Make sure you have rest days in between workouts to allow for your muscles to grow bigger and stronger. Read my post How To Avoid Overtraining.
Myth # 3: You can lose your beer gut by doing ab workouts
Some men think that to get a set of ripped abs they need to do hundreds of sit ups everyday. Firstly; you don’t need to hundreds of sit ups to develop strong abs. Secondly; your six pack won’t become visible when fat is covering those muscles. To reveal this specific set of muscles you need to reduce your body fat percentage. The best way to do this is by following a good weight training program mixed with high intensity interval training and a healthy diet plan. I recommend the following programs, The Truth About Six Pack Abs and Anabolic Cookbook.
Myth # 4: Fat turns into muscle
This is one myth I believed (for some reason). Muscle doesn’t turn into fat and fat doesn’t turn into muscle. Building lean muscle and losing body fat are two completely different processes.
Myth # 5: If you perform cardio as part of your training, you wont gain muscle
It’s true that if you perform hour long cardio sessions as part of your training, you will find it hard to gain muscle. However, if you concentrate on high intensity interval training mixed with a good weight training program and diet, you will gain lean muscle and lose body fat. Read my post Why High Intensity Interval Training Rocks.
Myth # 6: To be strong you need to get huge
There is no direct relationship between strength and size. You can be very small like Bruce Lee and still be extremely strong. It all depends on your training program and goals. Some men want to bulk up, however you don’t have to be big to be strong.
Myth # 7: Always train to muscle failure
Pushing your body to the max every training session can lead to overtraining. You need to have hard days as well as easy days in the gym allow your body to recuperate.
Myth # 8: If a man looks in shape, he knows a lot about training
Just because he looks lean and muscular, doesn’t mean he knows what he is talking about. Everyone is different. What works for one person doesn’t mean it will work for you. You need to find out what works for your body. By all means listen to him, and give it a go. But if you find it’s not working for you, change your program.
