So you’ve managed to get a date with someone special. Now it’s time to prepare!
While a first date can be intimidating and a little nerve racking, when you’re organised, you can relax. To help you avoid making mistakes before the date has even started, we provide the following preparation guide.
He who fails to plan, plans to fail
Firstly, women love a man with a plan. It shows that you aren’t shy about taking the lead. This step-by-step guide will help you make it to your date fully prepared.
Pick a date. Schedule a date when you’re both available. You’re a busy man with a lot going on in your life – work, gym, meeting up with friends, hobbies. You need to ensure that you have plenty of time to prepare and spend quality one-on-one time with her. First dates tend to work better on Saturdays. It gives you more time to get ready and rest up from the previous working week.
Pick a destination. You’ve picked a date – now it’s time to decide what you’re going to do. This must be your decision. You asked her out, so it’s your duty to come up with something she’ll enjoy. Take the lead and show initiative.

Make a reservation. If you’ve decided to take her somewhere that requires a reservation, make sure you make that reservation well in advance – not a few hours before the date.
Tell her exactly what you’re going to be doing on the date. She’ll appreciate it if you call her a few days before your date and let her know what you’ll be doing. Women like to plan ahead and think about what they’ll wear. Letting her know your plans will help her decide how she should dress and make herself up. Women hate being dressed unsuitably for the occasion.
Prepare what you’re going to wear. This may seem obvious, but remember to wear fresh, clean, non-creased clothes. Wash and iron your outfit a day before your date. Don’t decide to get ready 15 minutes before you’re supposed to be somewhere.
Dressing up will leave a good first impression. Even if you’ve planned a casual date, put on something dressy casual. You can learn how to dress for a first date by reading our ultimate guide.
Clean the car. If you’re going to drive and pick her up, make sure you give your car a nice clean inside and out before the date. First impressions count. Many women will use the cleanliness of your car to judge how you carry yourself in the rest of your life. If you have empty cans, bits of food and old dirty clothes everywhere, your date will assume your house is even messier.
Also, you may not notice, but your car probably smells. Air out your car and spray it down with air freshener to get rid of any nasty odours.
Tidy up your bachelor pad. If your date is successful, there’s a good chance that she’ll want to come back to your place. Make sure you give your bachelor pad a quick clean and stock up on essentials such as wine and nibbles.
Get a good night’s sleep. Rest well before you go on a date. Try to get at least 7-8 hours sleep the night before. Sleeping rejuvenates the mind and stimulates alertness….making you feel better, more confident and happier.
Go to the gym. You want to look and feel good before your date. Set time aside for exercise. A simple 30-45 minute workout will make you feel fresh and awake. Pumping your muscles and boosting your energy levels will help increase your confidence.
Eat and drink well. Stomach rumbling, a lack of energy – both caused by not eating and drinking enough. To minimise distractions, before you walk out the door, eat and drink something –but avoid take away foods and alcoholic drinks.
Groom yourself. Personal hygiene is essential on a first date. Here are some quick tips:
- Shower using a quality shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
- Have a clean shave on the day of the date.
- If you like stubble, use a stubble trimmer to tidy and complete your look – warning: short stubble can irritate her skin when kissing.
- Make sure your nails are clean and cut, both hands and feet.
- Use a good 24 hour antiperspirant. Right Guard, Lynx and Neiva for Men are reliable brands.
- Use some cologne and aftershave to smell nice – don’t bathe in it though.
- Apply a good moisturiser after you shower.
- Brush your teeth, the roof of your mouth and your tongue – carry mints around with you on the date.
- Get a haircut a week before your date and always use the same hairdresser. Don’t try a different style.
- Trim your nose hair and the hair growing on the back of your neck.
- Trim your pubic hair – just in case you get lucky!
Do your homework. Leading up to your date, take time out to catch up with current events and topics. These are great conversation starters.
Get some cash. Stop by the ATM and draw out some cash. Surprisingly, some places still don’t accept card as a form of payment. Carry cash around with you – making her pay because you haven’t got any cash is not an option.
Get in the mood. Women can tell if you’re feeling great or just fine by reading your body language – something women are very good at. About half an hour before you leave to meet your date, listen to your favourite music or watch some funny videos. You’ll go from feeling just fine to great, revealing your best self: relaxed, playful, happy, and confident.
Forget Anything? Check the day before to see if you have everything you need for the date. This prevents a lot of last minute stress. Toiletries, condoms, cash, phone and whatever else you’ll need – write a checklist and tick it off.
Be on time. Always plan to arrive on time. If you’re running late and it’s out of your hands, call your date and let her know how long you’re going to be.
Also, don’t turn up too early. Women will use every available minute they have to get ready. Don’t deny her this time by showing up 30 minutes early while she’s still in the shower. You’ll only embarrass her and she’ll feel pressured to rush getting ready.
Have a plan B. Things don’t always go to plan. You know this great place and take her there, only to find out its closed. Sometimes things are out of your control. Always have a backup plan. Not only does it save a ruined date and prevent bad stress, it’s also being spontaneous which women really like.
P.S. Before you prepare for a first date, you need to get one. If you want to learn how to attract, meet and date more women without much effort, then you need to read John Alexander’s How to Become an Alpha Male. I used to find it difficult getting dates until I read this eBook. It literally transformed my dating and sex life overnight…
